TRIBUTE TO A FRIEND AND A GREAT TEACHER

By Anwar Ibrahim.

I am saddened by the passing of my dear friend and teacher Dr. Abdul Hamid Abu Sulayman yesterday. I have known Dr. Abdul Hamid for almost five decades. As a student I looked up to him as an example of the critical thinking and progressive outlook that was desperately needed to create a revival and renaissance in the Muslim world.

I was fortunate to have spent countless hours in his presence, listening and learning. I was honoured to support his work and collaborate with him on many academic, intellectual and social welfare projects.

Dr. Abdul Hamid was the Secretary General of the World Assembly of Muslim Youth, rector of the International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM) and also one of the founders of the International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT). Throughout these roles he was a hardworking, disciplined and formidable character who left his imprint on all those who encountered him.

Dr. Abdul Hamid loved his time in Malaysia working with and teaching students from Malaysia and around the world. His legacy is reflected in the 1000s of students here and globally who have embraced the principles of lifelong learning, critical thinking and pursuit of a more just and enlightened society.

I pray that Allah reward him for his contributions to the ummah, for this sincerity of his commitment to uplifting humanity and that He forgive Dr. Abdul Hamid’s shortcomings.

Azizah and I offer our condolences to his wife, Sister Faekah, and his children and family. Al-Fatihah.

Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim is a former President of Muslim Youth Movement of Malaysia (ABIM) (1974-1982).
